Who is Yogi Aditya Nath?

Yogi Adityanath is an Indian monk and a popular Hindu nationalist politician who is the current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He was elected as the Chief Minister of UP in 2017 and has been in office since 19th of March. Since 1998- he has been the member of Parliament from Gorakhpur constituency. Yogi Adityanath is the main priest of the Gorakhnath Math. He has a huge reputation as a right-wing populist Hindutva revolutionary. He has been elected as the member of Parliament five times in a row. According to his Lok Sabha profile- he is a “religious missionary and social worker.” The legacy of Awaidhnath who had been the powerful mahant of the Gorakhnath Temple was passed on to Yogi Adityanath after his death in 2014. Currently- Yogi Adityanath runs a Hindu Yuva Vahini in Purvanchal which has also been known for spreading communal violence.

How is Yogi Adityanath’s relation with Bharatiya Janata Party?

The relationship between Yogi and Bharatiya Janata Party was not smooth in the beginning. For more than a decade- there was a struggle between BJP and Yogi Adityanath. He often criticized BJP for the dilution of Hindutva ideology and sometimes ridiculed and undermined the party. Yogi Adityanath established his strong and independent power base in Uttar Pradesh without any support from BJP. Rather he was strongly backed by his own Hindu Yuva Vahini and the Gorakhnath temple. He was quite confident that he would be able to command over Bharatiya Janata Party. But BJP didn’t listen to his voice. This led Yogi Adityanath to revolt against BJP by fielding against their official candidates. Yogi Adityanath was quite successful when his candidate Radha Mohan Das Agarwal from Gorakhpur defeated BJP Cabinet Minister Shiv Pratap Shukla in 2002 by a wide margin. In 2007- Adityanath threatened to field 70 candidates for the State assembly against the official candidates of BJP but at the end he reached a compromise. In 2009- there was a rumor that Adityanath had campaigned against the BJP candidates. In spite of these revolts- Yogi Adityanath was in the good book of BJP and RSS leaders.

The then deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani- RSS Chief Rajendra Singh and Ashok Singhal- the chief of Vishva Hindu Parishad visited Yogi Adityanath in Gorakhpur. 

Who was the guru of Yogi Aditya Nath?

Mahant Avaidyanath was the guru and mentor of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Born as Kripal Singh Bisht- Mahant Avaidyanath was a preacher and a politician. He succeeded Guru Digvijay Nath and became the Mahant (Chief Priest) of Gorakhnath Temple. He was also a part of the Hindu Mahasabha and later joined Bharatiya Janata Party. He has also been elected to the Lok Sabha four times from Gorakhpur Constituency and played an important role in the movement related to Ram Janmabhoomi. In 1970- Avaidyanath was elected as an independent candidate and later in 1989 he won as a candidate of Hindu Mahasabha. He was again an elected member of Parliament from the same seat as a nominee of Bharatiya Janata Party in 1991. He mentored Yogi Adityanath after he had left home when he was just 21 years old. Within 5 years- Yogi Adityanath became his favorite disciple. Mahant Avaidyanath led the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and appealed to listeners to vote for those parties which promised to liberate the religious places that belong to Hinduism. Mahant Avaidyanath died on 12th September in 2014 and Yogi Adityanath succeeded him as the high priest of the Gorakhpur Temple. Narendra Modi and then BJP leaders sent condolences on the death of Mahant Avaidyanath Ji.

Sometimes his controversial statements and sometimes forced conversion to Hinduism- Yogi Aditynath has always been a favorite when it comes to controversies. Below are some examples of controversial statements made by Yogi Adityanath.

  • “I will not stop till I turn UP into a Hindu Rashtra”.
  • “I think there is no difference between the language of Shah Rukh Khan and Hafiz Saeed.” To this statement he also added that if majority of people stopped watching his movie- then Shah Rukh Khan would have to wander like any other Muslim in the country.
  • Against Love Jihad and conversions of Hindu girls- his statement was- “If one Hindu girl is converted- I will convert 100 Muslim girls.” Here is another one- “We will not tolerate harassment of Hindus in the state at any cost...If anybody tries to touch Hindus in eastern UP- he will have to face the consequences”.
  • “Mother Teresa was part of a conspiracy to Christianize India”. According to him- the Hindus were converted into Christians in the name of offering service to God.
  • “Those who want to avoid Yoga and Lord Shankar can leave Hindustan.” He believes that Lord Shankar was the one who started Yoga and He is in every particle of this country. So- if anybody wants to avoid Yoga or Lord Shankar should leave India.
  • Not just religions- Yogi Adityanath also attacked feminism. He said- “Western feminism will hamper the creation and stability of home and family.”
  • While commenting on the Indian secularism- UP CM Adityanath stated- “You (non-BJP parties) claim you are secular but the agenda you implement is communal...there are 12 lakh Hindu saints in the country but you talk about giving salaries to imams. Is this secularism?” He uttered this statement in a Parliament meeting conducted on August 13- 2014
  • During a television show- Yogi Adityanath addressed the minorities and said- “We want you (minorities) not to kill anybody and live peacefully and concentrate on progress...If the other side does not stay in peace- we will teach them how to stay in peace...in the language that they understand.”

Banning Illegal slaughterhouses:

In April 2017- Yogi Adityanath ordered a closure of illegal slaughterhouses in Uttarpradesh along with a ban on cow smuggling. As a Hindu firebrand he always wanted to establish cow protection since cows are revered as mother in Hinduism. In order to protect “Gau Mata  and establish Gau Raksha- he banned all the illegal slaughterhouses in UP. Although it was a controversial decision- a huge number of people supported Yogi Adityanath in his decision. The UP CM was also running an opinion poll on his website to know about what his people think of his decision. In Gorakhnath Math- there is an animal shelter with 500 cows where Yogi spent most of his mornings before becoming a Chief Minister. Killing cows and selling beef was illegal in Uttar Pradesh.

His Anti-Romeo Squad:

Just two days after Yogi Adityanath became the CM of Uttar Pradesh- he felt the need to protect the honor of women. BJP ordered to create Anti-Romeo Dal near colleges to ensure the security of women and control eve-teasing. Each team had two policemen- one male and one female. Under the jurisdiction of one police station- two or three teams were deployed. Number of teams was dependent on the number of schools and colleges in that particular area. They were ordered to patrol around and identify the eve-teasers and the trouble-makers. They were mostly in uniforms and sometimes in ordinary clothes. Their task was to warn the miscreants- concerning parents of such activities and even taking actions against them depending on how serious the case was. However- it created a little bit of fuss among people since it was spreading terror among the college goers.
